How to: Read PowerPoint 7.0 file in PowerPoint 4.0.
Solution:
Either install a filter, or convert the files to 4.0 format in 7.0.
NOTE: PowerPoint 7.0 files cannot be opened and saved directly in PowerPoint 4.0.
Do one of the following to read PowerPoint 7.0 files in PowerPoint 4.0:
1) Install a filter in PowerPoint 4.0, to open PowerPoint 7.0 files.
NOTE 1: Installable filters are available on the Microsoft Office CD. Contact Microsoft Customer Service at 1-800-360-7561.
NOTE 2: The VSETUP program must be used to install the filters.
2) In PowerPoint 7.0, save files in 4.0 format, and convert them with the PowerPoint Viewer :
a) Open the presentation in PowerPoint 7.0.
b) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As'. (The File Save dialog box appears.)
c) Type the desired filename in the 'File name' box.
d) Select the 'PowerPoint 4.0 (*.ppt)' from the 'Save as type' drop-down list box.

e) Click 'Save'. (PowerPoint 7.0 starts the PowerPoint Viewer. The PowerPoint Viewer saves the file in PowerPoint 4.0 format.)
NOTE: When saving a presentation in PowerPoint 4.0 format, some PowerPoint 7.0 features may be lost.
